Researcher, PNI

The Internet you know and love is at risk! A range of political and commercial forces threaten our chances to keep the internet a global public resource, open and accessible to all.

At the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation, we are passionate about fuelling a movement for a healthy internet. We do this by engaging movement leaders and encouraging thousands around the world to take action alongside us.

We are seeking a Researcher to join our Digital Engagement team in a new, permanent position. In this role, you will assist the Lead, *Privacy Not Included with the creation of our award-winning, consumer-facing *Privacy Not Included content. The ideal candidate is curious, pays attention to detail, loves digging into consumer technology, and is motivated to make that consumer technology a little safer for us all!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Dig into privacy policies and other product documentation to research things like what data a product collects on users, how it shares that data, if/how users can delete or access their own personal data, and if/how the product uses AI technology.
  • Maintain strong attention to detail so that we can ensure all the information we capture and put into *Privacy Not Included (PNI) content is 100% accurate, and we can support this content with proof.
  • Work closely with our Lead, *Privacy Not Included to hone the PNI criteria, conduct the research, quality check accuracy, and present it clearly in a way a general consumer audience (rather than an already privacy-conscious audience) can easily review and understand.
  • Contact and communicate with technology companies—via their customer service, media, or any other creative ways to reach out—to gather requested information before and after publication. This includes being available at off-hour times during the week post-launch to handle this.
  • Work with our Lead on drafting communications like the narratives and story lines around the launch edition of PNI. And help make sure partners talking with the media have all the relevant research and information available for the interview.
  • Assist our Lead with entering all product content in the CMS and help quality check accuracy of data.

  • Demonstrated ability as a Researcher or in a similar role, either in non-profit or for-profit contexts.
  • Proven track record to conduct research in both the US and UK/EU.
  • A solid understanding of technical security concepts like encryption, password management, personal data collection, security vulnerabilities, and artificial intelligence.
  • Strong ability to read, decipher, understand, and translate privacy policies, product documentation, technical papers, and press stories about consumer products.
  • Solid understanding of consumers, consumer behaviour, and consumer products
  • Good interpersonal skills (both to work with internal teams and external companies/partners)
  • Strong attention to detail and proven ability to meet deadlines

If you are deeply interested in the role, please don’t hesitate to apply even if your experience or skills don’t perfectly match our ideal credentials. We seek to hire a person who will become an integral member of our team. We all love to expand our skills through our work.

The Mozilla Foundation can hire in the jurisdictions of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us to request accommodation.
